The Directorate Housing and Infrastructure strives to ensure a meaningful and excellent service delivery in terms of Housing Projects, Public Works and Electricity.

Functions

  • Implementation of all Capital Projects within the Hibiscus Coast Municipality.
  • Provision and construction of Low Income Housing to residents within the Hibiscus Coast Municipal Area.
  • Maintenance of Streetlights in all Hibiscus Coast Areas.
  • Distribution of Electricity in the Port Shepstone, Marburg and Merlewood areas.

These include the Construction and Upgrading of the following:

  • Crèches: Establishment of daycare facilities and education centers for children
  • Halls Multi-Purpose Community Centres: Ensure that all communities have access to basic community facilities and social services, to include clinics, AIDS support services, library, adult education and skills training and computer facilities.
  • Roads: Improve accessibility in rural areas and improve road linkages between urban and rural components. Upgrade rural road network based on community needs and development corridors as identified in the spatial framework and roads policy.
  • Stormwater: Construction and Upgrading of Stormwater Systems to prevent flooding during heavy rains
  • Sporting Facilities: To ensure access to sports and recreational facilities through improved sports opportunities for the youth, promotion of traditional sporting codes and provision of recreational facilities based on the areas natural resources and community networks
  • Taxi Ranks: Provision of public transportation facilities. To provide shelter during harsh weather conditions. Access to toilet facilities

Is our Department responsible for water and sanitation?
This function has been taken over by the Ugu District Municipality. Please contact them on 039 688 5700.

Who can we speak to regarding a request for rezoning, relation of building line and restrictive conditions?
These questions are Town Planning related. After restructuring Town Planning and Building Control are now separate Departments. You can however contact the Town Planning Department on 039 315 9243

Where do we submit plans for new dwellings or additions and alterations?
All plans are submitted at our Uvongo Municipal Offices. For more information in this regard please contact 039 315 9250

We would like our roads to be repaired, who do we contact?
Maintaining and repairing of existing roads is the function of the Cleansing and Maintenance Department. However the construction of new roads forms part of our Departments Functions. It must also be noted that all projects and prioritized and confirmed by Council and this Department merely implements the projects that are chosen by Council.

Who qualifies for a Low Income House?
Any person who is a South African citizen and is part of a Household earning a combined income of R 3 500.00 or less

What do we need to apply for a Low Income House?

  • South African ID Document of the applicant and their spouse (If applicable)
  • Salary slip of applicant and spouse
  • Birth Certificates of dependents below the age of 21.
  • Marriage Certificate ( If applicable)
