Entrance Fees

The entrance to the museum is free, however donations are welcome.

Opening Hours

  • The museum is opened from Monday to Friday , 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
  • The Museum is situated in Athlone Drive,
  • Adjacent to Princess Elizabeth Drive
  • Opposite Sharks Den Restaurant. (Port Shepstone beachfront)

The Port Shepstone Museum presently displays the following features:

  • Model of the Port Shepstone harbour
  • Stone Age & Iron Age displays
  • Shipping & shipwrecks along the coast
  • The world famous sardine run

Margate Art Museum

Margate Art Museum Opened in 1994 the Margate Art Museum is one of five municipal art galleries in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and operates within a large region that is mostly rural and incorporates several popular coastal towns.

The museum consists of the main gallery (approx. twenty square meters), conservation room, office, and adjoining educational venue/exhibition space and is connected to the Margate Library. Accessibility to the museum has been prioritized by providing a diverse calendar of educational exhibitions, developing outreach programmes and expanding the art collection.

Objectives and core functions: Contributing to the study and enjoyment of the visual arts. Supplying a cultural and aesthetic quality to the community. Providing a platform for local and non-local artists .Preserving our cultural diversity and heritage in the form of an art collection. To promote positive dialogue and understanding across all sectors of the community. Developing outreach and educational programmes for all sectors of the community To make the museum accessible to all communities within our region.

Functions

  • Collecting and caring for collections of the visual arts
  • Providing an important resource for educational and research purposes.
  • Contributing to the study and enjoyment of the visual arts and art history in the community
  • Supplying a cultural and aesthetic quality to community life
  • Undertaking research into issues concerning the cultural and educational aspirations of the community
  • Publicizing by way of press and notice boards the opening times, exhibitions and event details
  • Liaising with external organizations (Museum and Heritage Services, Natal Arts Trust, etc) for various services and benefits available
  • Offering the public a venue for art based activities

Outreach

  • Running workshops for groups in and away from the museum (skills development)
  • Having art and craft displays with information in libraries such as Gamalakhe
  • Organizing community based art projects such as murals
  • Supporting local art initiatives such as ColaborArt by offering the museum facilities

Education

  • Supporting schools by offering guided tours and worksheets for learners
  • Running workshops for learners and educators
  • Running art competitions
  • Offering talks and critique sessions for artists
