Beaches
This section comprises of approximately 75 km of coast line from Hibberdene in the North to Port Edward in the South The area consists of 22 protected beaches and numerous satellite beaches which are not protected but do provide public amenities e.g. Public facilities and Tidal Pools etc. There are currently six registered Boat Launch sites within the area.
The Section is responsible for management of all swimming pools which currently comprise
- Tidal Pools - 16
- Kiddies Fresh Water Pools - 7
- Olympic Pool – 1
- Olympic Pool (Half Size) – currently under construction Gamalakhe
- Olympic Pool (Half Size) - Marburg Half size
Functions and Services
- To provide a safe well managed controlled bathing environment for all
- Maintain and manage existing Blue Flag Beaches x5 full status and x1 Pilot status
- Upgrading of certain additional beaches to Blue Flag Status
- Weekly monitoring of water quality (sea/lagoon) arranging educational programs for local schools dealing with environmental aspects regarding rivers, estuaries, rocky and sandy shores as required by Blue Flag criteria
- Ongoing maintenance of all beach facilities and upgrading of certain areas
- Management of all fresh waters and tidal swimming pools
- Management of six registered boat launch sites
- Management of two contracts responsible for supplying permanent as well as temporary lifeguards to patrol 22 protected beaches
